Enterprises have started to realize how important IoT is to their companies. IoT is a network of internet-connected devices, provided with the ability to collect and transfer data across a network. IoT technology is transforming industries like automotive, transportation, healthcare, energy, manufacturing, etc.
Microsoft was already providing multi-layer IoT security and IoT security monitoring through its Azure IoT security, which thousands of Microsoft customers are presently using and securing their IoT devices. While securing IoT devices their vision is to further enhance the security while simplifying IoT and make securing IoT devices easy.
In view of this, Microsoft announced it will be acquiring CyberX, an organization that focuses on detecting, stopping, and predicting security breaches on internet of things networks. CyberX enables enterprises to discover their existing IoT assets, manage and improve the security of those devices. With CyberX, enterprises can see a digital map of thousands of devices across their organization or within a building and collect information about their assets and vulnerabilities.
Possessing such visibility is critical for understanding where security risks may exist and then mitigate those risks. It is also a fundamental step to securely enable smart manufacturing, smart grid and other digitization use cases across production facilities and the supply chain thus helping organizations to efficiently manage their business.
Microsoft explained in its announcement that it already provides Azure security solutions for IoT implementations. However, it is trying to address and improvise in some of its customer's challenge areas like:
Giving customers visibility into what IoT devices are already connected to their networks.
Managing the security on existing IoT devices (referred to as "brownfield devices") that have been historically difficult due to a myriad of custom protocols.
